Summary

My comic is about intolerance. There are four characters in four situations in which one of them is left out, because the other three don’t want to accept him/her for being different. I wanted to show the nature of intolerance, by showing that each of us could be different from a group of people and left out for that reason. By putting all of the characters in the ‘left out’ position, I’m emphasizing how absurd intolerance is. At the end, all four characters are together and happy.

Biography

I have just graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Latvian Art Academy. I’m interested in various forms of art: illustration, comics, animation, photography and painting. I’m currently most focused on drawing and comics.

Summary

The decision to name this piece of work ‘’Burocrazy’’ (‘’bureaucracy’’ in English) was made after spending a lot of time and effort filing and compiling documents, in this case linked to obtaining a residence permit. The drawings represent the majority of the foreigners we met in immigration offices, who came from different walks of life and displayed a unique diversity, each with their own language, culture and way of dressing. The decision to present only a single item in colour is a means of drawing attention away from the external differences between the people involved, emphasising instead the aspect in focus at that particular moment. Another key feature is the use of different fonts to symbolise the different accents in which Italian sentences are spoken.

Biography

I am originally from Kenya and I am currently studying nursing in Italy at the University of Padua. I draw for fun and I love going to the cinema! I entered this competition after a friend directed me to the website. Having experienced the problem of racism, I wanted to tell my story through my drawings.

Who can request an Italian residence permit?

As of 1 January 2012, there were just over 3.600.000 non-EU citizens living in Italy, around 100,000 more than the year before. Between 2010 and 2011, the numbers of new entrants arriving in the country decreased sharply: 361,690 permits were issued during 2011, almost 40% less than the year before.

The majority of migrants come from Morocco (506.369), Albania (491.495), China (277.570), Ukraine (223.782) and the Philippines (152.382). But the greatest number of migrants come from Romania (1.071.342).

Who are we?

In spite of their young average age, the foreign population (15-64 years) has similar levels of education to Italians. Almost half of foreigners possess a middle school degree, compared to 45.3% of Italians. The numbers of graduates are almost identical (40.9% and 41.1% respectively), while one immigrant out of ten possesses a university degree compared to 13.5% of Italians. In 2011 foreign labour represented 10.2% of the total labour force.
The employment rate among foreigners continues to be higher than that among Italians (66.2% compared to 60.7% respectively), as does the unemployment rate (12.1% compared to 8.0% respectively). On the other hand, the inactivity rates among the immigrant population, are almost ten percentage points lower than those among the Italian population (29.1% compared to 38.6%). For the third year in a row, deteriorating working conditions, and particularly declining rates of employment, are more pronounced among immigrants than among Italians.

(Source: ISTAT)

How does one get a residence permit?
Those arriving in Italy for the first time have 8 days to formally request a residence permit.
To get a residence permit it is necessary to present:
A request form
A valid passport with entry visa
A photocopy of the document
4 identical recent passport photograph
A stamp worth 14,12 Euro
Documentation relevant to the type of residence permit requested
Fees ranging from 80-100 Euros, paid at the post office
Duration of the residence permit
Up to 6 months for seasonal jobs.
Up to 9 months for seasonal jobs that require an extension.
Up to 1 year for study or vocational training.
Up to 2 years for self-employment, employment for an indefinite period and family reunification.

The permit is issued after 4 to 6 months by the immigration service.
In the meantime, applicants are provided with a receipt for the request for the permit or for renewal of the permit.

Summary

This comic addresses stereotypes, making fun of the real diversity that exists and the stupidity of prejudices abroad. This example can be applied to any country: stereotypes do not correspond to local realities or human diversity, but to conventional and non-rational simplifications.

Alex Galbero was born in 1989 (shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall), and from a young age has had a passion for graphic art. He studies design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona and works for a composition and communication agency.

Summary

Between the windows of the flats tremendous insults fly everyday. Each person offends his neighbour with racist stereotypes. The reader silently and superficially judges the characters, but he doesn’t know that they are listening, and they can be badly injured from his inner thoughts.

Biography

Summary

“Children Reveal What Adults Hide” is based on my own experience. This comic comprises a reflection on most of the stereotypes I had to face while growing up.

Biography

I come from a multicultural family. I’m a graphic artist who devours independent publications and comics for breakfast and plays the baritone saxophone at lunch. I’ve lived in Viña del Mar (Chile), Lisbon (Portugal) and Bilbao (Spain).

Page 1

1. My name is Amanda. I spent most of my childhood in Chile.

2. I was nine when my family decided to move to Portugal.

3. «The mushroom releases spores into the air, in a process known as sporulation».

Page 2

1. Our mom is Portuguese but I was born with darker skin and Chilean facial features like my father. / I bet she doesn’t shower!

2. Because of this and that, Portuguese children refused to accept me as one of them. / Good morning class! I want you to welcome Amanda, she’s from Chile, and can’t speak Portuguese very well yet. / Chile? That’s in China, right? / Pffft, hehehe.

3. «The spores that land in their ideal environment begin to produce mycelium under the ground».

Page 3

1. When I arrived I saw a lot of posters against ethnic and social discrimination. / This was clearly an issue.

2. Look at her skin! She’s a gypsy and all gypsies are robbers!

3. I’m sure her parents are criminals fleeing from justice!

4. «The growth of the mycelium produces a young, very small mushroom covered by a structure called the universal veil».

Page 4

1. Lisbon is home to a lot of different communities. In the streets there is a multicultural feel, but at home people change their behavior, believing that they are hidden by their four walls, and they freely express their fears and preconceptions. Children imitate these as soon as they are outside, revealing the truth behind the mask. / It’s scary to see that it’s the same everywhere.

2. My father says that it’s because of people like her that our country has problems…

3. Stop! You’re wrong!

4. «The mushroom breaks through this veil and grows taller and wider».

Page 5

1. I grew up confused about my identity. It took me a while to understand that my physical features don’t define who I am or where I belong. I could be Chilean or Portuguese if I wanted to. What makes a country is the people who live in it, no matter where they come from.

2. The adult mushroom society produces spores stereotypes, and can the process start again?

Summary

I have thought a lot about the question “where are you from?” Maybe this is because I sometimes feel uncomfortable giving an answer. This question often arises from curiosity and interest. But it can also express insecurity and is too often a rhetorical question. The answer can be the truth or an imaginary story. We become accustomed to the question and we can feel like we are not a part of it. Some people have to answer this question every day, again and again. My comic shows four different day-to-day situations, in four different cities in Europe…

Biography

I was born in Potsdam, in Germany. Six years ago I went to Barcelona to visit a friend and I decided to stay. Three years ago I moved to Italy. I have been drawing since I was a child, but I have never published anything. I have just drawn for myself and for the people around me.

Summary

People in a hurry usually take shortcuts, just like a man who prefers to give money to a beggar (and get rid of any sense of guilt) rather than having a positive chat with him first. When shortcuts are taken while reasoning, they might turn into stereotypes. Stereotypes are an ancestral response to an even more ancestral fear: a lack of time. In any case, there will never be any excuse for racism.

Biography

I was born in Senegal in 1992, and two years later my mother and I joined my father in Italy.
I’m currently studying Tourism Economics at the University of Bologna and I make amateur comics in my spare time.
